publish date:01-09-2026

Rajrupa Das

The preceding sections of this study have examined various dimensions of urban Moroccan women’s dress and sartorial practice during the 19th and 20th centuries. Part i established the broader framework for understanding women’s dress through a combination of visual and textual sources, together with comparative consideration of contemporary urban men’s dress. It also introduced the layered structure of the female vestimentary ensemble, beginning with the principal forms of underdress and garments worn closest to the body. Part ii and iii subsequently extended this examination to the outer layers of dress. While part ii focused on lower body garments, encompassing a range of trouser forms and skirts, part iii examined the qaftan Qafṭān: (Persian: khaftān, Pl. qafāṭin, synonyms: ghandurah, qandurah Qandūrah: (Arabic, pl. qanādīr, synonyms: ghandurah, darā’ah, dishdāshah, jalābah, jallābīyah, qaftan, mqta’, thawb Thawb: (Arabic: thawb,  Pl.
