Object Details
The tunic is made from hand-stitched silk fabric, patterned in red, yellow, and orange vertical stripes. The circular head opening extends to a long slit open down to the naval, with an internal flap for coverage. Heavy silver embroidery lines the slit, outlined in a zigzag shape, and ending in a large diamond. There is embroidery on the back of the garment in the shape of an [M], and light embroidery around the circumference of the wrists. Extra fabric is sewn at the armpit, forming a gusset.
This tunic dress was likely worn by a girl from the Yemeni Jewish community, which is almost non-existent today as most now live in diaspora communities and have adopted more modernised traditions. The headdress that completes this ensemble was worn by Yemeni Jewish girls before their marriage. It was removed on their wedding night and replaced by a headscarf.
