Object Features
This is a Palestinian Bedouin necklace possibly from the Ottoman era.
The necklace is made of brass and possibly glass or agate beads strung in a silver chain with dangling silver coins dating back to 1327 Hijri that corresponds to c. 1909-1910 CE of the Gregorian calendar.
The coins bear the calligraphic seal (tughra) of the Ottoman Emperor Mehmed V. Although attributed to Jerusalem, this necklace resembles the (sha’riah) in style. The sha’riah necklace is typical of the Hebron neighbourhood south of the West Bank region of Palestine.
