The Zay Initiative Arabic posts UAE dress Dr Reem el Mutwalli

It is with great pleasure that we will be sharing a series of Arabic articles (with English translation), written by Dr. Reem Tariq El Mutwalli, based on those featured on Zahrat Alkhaleej (2018-2019). They explore the traditional fashion dress of the Arab world, each article tells a story of culture, tradition and art.  The articles aim to educate and emphasise the historical authenticity, and depth of the traditional Arab dress.

She began: “In my book Sultani – Renovated Traditions, I discuss women’s fashion in the United Arab Emirates, during the reign of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1966-2004). In the first and second edition of the book, I delved into the history of women’s fashion in the UAE, the country I was raised in.

With the advancement of social media over the years, specifically Instagram (@sultanibookuae, @thezayinitiative) has enabled me to share my thoughts on fashion and post related pictures. It also allowed my followers, irrespective of who they are, an interactive platform where they can express their opinion. Especially since fashion is a major component of their traditions and folklore. Consequently, this led to a dialogue that was not only elegant in the way it was conducted but was also informative and responsible, even when discussing differences of opinions or thoughts.”

We hope that these posts will be an extension to this dialogue, inspirational, informative and we look forward to sharing our passion with you.
